Back in 2004, I went with a group of seminary classmates to watch Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion of the Christ. If you’ve seen it, you probably remember how graphic the portrayal of Christ’s suffering was. Crucifixion was an excruciating way to die.
Holy Week gives us the opportunity to step back and focus on the sufferings that Jesus experienced–not just the physical agony, as bad as that was, but the deeper spiritual reality of bearing the wrath of God so that we could be reconciled to our heavenly Father.
I’m going to keep this short and encourage you to set aside some time for the next several days to read through the gospel accounts of Holy Week as you prepare your heart for services this weekend.
Wednesday, April 13: Matthew 26:6-28:15
Thursday, April 14: Mark 14:1-16:8
Friday, April 15: Luke 22:1-24:35
Saturday, April 16: John 18:1-20:23
In closing, I wanted to share one of my favorite traditional hymns from Good Friday.
May you have a blessed Holy Week and a joyful Easter celebrating the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, who triumphed over the grave.
Great post, lots to think about.
I just started on Substack a few days ago and you are my first subscription. If you have recommendations or tips I’d appreciate it. Have a great Easter Sunday!
